What to Consider Before Buying an Airsoft Rifle

When you are in the market for a gun, you will find many available options.

Each specific gun, make, and model seeks to meet specific needs for specific users.

So we’ve prepared a little handy guide. Below is a quick guide to help you select the best Airsoft rifle to meet your needs.

Consider the Airsoft Rifle Power Source

There are three types of power sources for airsoft rifles: Spring powered rifles, AEG’s (automatic electric guns), and gas-powered rifles.

Spring-powered riffles

A spring-powered rifle is a mechanically powered rifle that requires the gun to be manually cocked prior to each shot.

And in case you’re wondering…

These tend to be less expensive, however, they are less durable than battery and gas-powered guns and are limited in power and range.

Spring powered rifles are not ideal for gameplay due to their slow rate of fire. Younger players may find it difficult to cock the gun before each shot as well.

AEG Riffles

AEG’s are battery powered rifles. They are the most common type of Airsoft gun.

They run on batteries and use a motor-driven piston assembly to shoot BBs.They often come with both full and semi-auto firing capabilities.

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced players alike can be served well by AEG’s on the field.

Gas-powered riffles

Gas-powered rifles are powered by either CO2 or green gas.

These guns tend to be a little more expensive. However, they have better power and range than their counterparts and are better constructed as well.

As a matter of fact…

…advanced players will be more inclined to use gas-powered guns, as well as intermediate players who plan on playing for a long time.

Here are a few things you need to take into consideration:

  • The power source (Spring-powered, Electric, Gas, etc)
  • How the gun is constructed
  • Does the gun have a hop up adjustment?
  • What kind of environment you will be using the gun
  • The level of accuracy that you want in your gun
  • The distance that you have between yourself and your target
  • Weight of the gun
  • The size of the gun compared to yourself (not too big, not too small)
  • Possibility of future upgrades to the gun you buy
  • Does the gun allow for additional attachments?

The FN Herstal SCAR-L is a spring-powered rifle capable of shooting at 400 FPS.

The average battery-powered airsoft gun fires at around 200 FPS, so this is an obvious step up.

And that’s not all.

Not only does it pack a punch, but it is also extremely affordable, making it a fantastic beginner gun.

Or, if you’re like me and just want something to shoot at targets in the backyard with, this is a great gun to consider.

Some important features are:

  • Comes in 2 colors (Tan, Black)
  • 400 FPS
  • 300 round mid-cap magazine
  • Durable Polymer Construction
  • Spring Powered replica of the FN Herstal SCAR-L Assault Rifle
  • Officially licensed by FN Herstal
  • Tactical Foregrip
  • Flip-up Front and Rear sights
  • Adjustable Folding Stock
  • Full Length 20mm Picatinny Rails
  • Safe/Single Fire modes

The FN Herstal SCAR-L serves recreational and beginner Airsoft users.

These include children and mature lovers of shooting games.

But keep this in mind:

Usage by children below 18 years, however, must be under the strict supervision of an adult and done with the appropriate protective gear.

Quick Glance

What's Good

  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • High powered spring rifle, no batteries necessary
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Comes with a Hi-Cap magazine
  • Official replica licensed by FN Herstal

What's Bad

  • Harder to cock the gun for children
  • Has to be cocked for every shot, slow rate of fire
  • Magazine feeding is an issue for some users

Power Source

The FN Herstal SCAR-L is spring powered, meaning a high-tension internal spring is the firing mechanism.

This has its pros and cons. It is more powerful and accurate than most AEGs, but has a much slower fire rate.

Weight

The gun weighs 4 pounds. The real gun by FN Herstal weighs about 7.5 pounds, so this is a much lighter replica gun.

Caliber

The gun comes with 100 6 mm bbs, and can chamber both the .12g bb and the .20g bb.

The range of the gun may increase with the heavier bb. We recommend the .12bb for indoor play and the .20g for outdoor environments.

Shot Velocity

The shot velocity of the FN Herstal SCAR-L is 400 FPS (feet per second). This gives it excellent range and velocity in any environment.

Magazine Capacity

The FN Herstal SCAR-L comes with a 300 round mid-cap magazine.

The magazine is fed through a spring that feeds the bbs into the gun from a small slot in the front of the mag.

This slot holds 25 bbs and has to be refilled by manually pressing down on the spring and tilting the mag forward, which will cause more bbs to fill up the slot to be fed into the gun again.

Some users may find this mechanism tricky.

Look and Feel

The gun comes in both black and tan finishes, which allows for personal preference to be added when making the decision to purchase.

The adjustable collapsible stock is a very cool feature that helps in both CQC situations and for storage.

Not to mention its comfortability, which is top-notch.

In fact…

…the weight of the gun is on the light side, so you won’t get tired lugging it around all day if you’re playing in the field.

The gun exterior is entirely polymer, which gives it a sturdy overall feel.
